chapter thirteen
I needed to talk to Kevin. The people he was involved with had seen me. Jaws had chased me. I needed to know exactly how much trouble I was in.
I was also thinking it might be time to go to the police, but I wanted to give my cousin a heads-up. I wasn’t sure what he would do, but I owed him something. He’d told me to stay away. I hadn’t listened.
Besides, when had the police ever done my family any favors? Dad’s “anonymous tip” about his company’s pollution had landed him in Winnipeg.
I looked for Kevin on the hill and tried his cell phone. No luck. I wasn’t worried though. After school today, he had driven me to the hill in his truck. He’d drive me back to his parents’ place tonight. I’d talk to him then.
Sweep was over, the hill was closed. I waited by Kevin’s truck. He was due any minute. There was no sign of Jaws’s van in the parking lot, thank god.
Ten minutes later I was still waiting, leaning against the cab, getting colder by the second. Somehow I didn’t think it was a good idea to put my newfound lock-picking skills to use. Especially since I had no lockpicking skills.
Nope, no Kevin. Instead, I saw the one person (besides Jaws) I least wanted to see. Jamie. She was carrying her board, probably about to leave for the night, when she spotted me and changed direction.
We hadn’t talked, but she had to have figured out by now that I was pissed off. Whenever I saw her on the hill, I took off in the other direction. If she didn’t know why…well, it wasn’t my problem.
Besides, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you steal a guy’s magazine interview, he’s not going to be happy.
She stood in front of me, looking kind of awkward. I had never seen Jamie look awkward before.
“Hey,” she said. Then she stopped, like she wasn’t sure what else to say.
“How’s it going?” I said. I hoped my tone of voice told her that I didn’t really care. For once, I seemed to have more words than Jamie.
“Are you mad? About the magazine thing?”
I shrugged. “No big deal.”
“I wouldn’t have done it, but they were in a hurry, and no one could find you. Where did you go, anyhow? Didn’t you hear them paging you?”
Okay, so Jamie still had more words than I did. “Don’t worry about it,” I said.
In a flash she went from awkward to angry. “Well, I wouldn’t, except that you’re all of a sudden acting like a big freaking jerk! What’s with you, anyhow? You were the one who left. Just like you showed up late for Ted. I thought you were different from those other losers. I thought you were serious.”
I met her eyes. “I am serious,” I said. And I was. She didn’t understand.
“Then what’s wrong with you? You’re blowing every chance you get.”
That was a bit rich, coming from the girl who had benefited each time I screwed up.
